Why choose a private tour of the Colosseum's underground?

Access to the hypogeum and arena floor is strictly limited and it isn’t an experience you can improvise on the spot. Together with your dedicated, Scandinavian-speaking private guide, you will gain unique insights into the very heart of the Colosseum. This is the ultimate way to experience the city’s most iconic landmarks in an exclusive, personalized setting.

By choosing a private tour, you get:

  • A Scandinavian Expert: No language barriers. Our tours are conducted in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or English, making them perfect for both children and adults.

  • Access to areas most visitors never see: The underground passages where gladiators and wild animals once waited to enter the arena.

  • The full story, without oversimplification: Learn about the complex logistics behind the Colosseum’s “backstage” – the lifts, trapdoors and mechanisms that created ancient Rome’s most spectacular shows.

ICONIC LANDMARKS WE VISIT

Where the Gladiators Waited

This exclusive tour takes you into the most inaccessible parts of the Colosseum: the hypogeum, the intricate network of underground tunnels and chambers where gladiators, animals and stage technicians prepared for ancient Rome’s most dramatic spectacles.

Walk in the footsteps of those who once fought for their lives, as you explore the narrow passages and the ingenious lift mechanisms that could raise wild animals straight up to the arena floor, to the astonishment of the crowd.

We then finish where the history truly comes alive: on the reconstructed arena floor itself, with a view over the seating stands just as a gladiator would have seen it.

This isn’t just another visit to one of the world’s most famous monuments – it’s a rare chance to stand where ancient history’s most legendary drama unfolded, brought to life by a guide who makes every detail come alive.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUR COLOSSEUM TOUR

Frequently Asked Questions About Your Colosseum Tour (FAQ)

What is the hypogeum?

The hypogeum is the underground network of tunnels and chambers beneath the Colosseum’s arena, where gladiators, animals and stage technicians prepared before being raised to the arena floor through a system of lifts and trapdoors.
Yes, this special ticket includes access to the reconstructed arena floor, a privilege not included in standard Colosseum tickets.
You can choose between a 3-hour or a 4-hour version of this tour. The 3-hour option covers the Colosseum, the underground hypogeum and the arena floor. The 4-hour version includes all of the above, plus a visit to the Forum Romanun and the Palatine Hill.
Since access to the hypogeum is limited, we recommend booking as early as possible – ideally several weeks or months in advance, especially during high season.
Yes! While this page is in English, our primary focus is providing Scandinavian-speaking guides. You can book your private tour completely in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish. Our licensed guides ensure there are no language barriers, delivering rich historical insights in your own language.
The tour is best suited for children with a genuine interest in history, since the hypogeum involves narrow spaces and stairs. We recommend it for children roughly 8–10 years and older.
Unfortunately, no. The hypogeum has narrow passageways, stairs and uneven surfaces that make it inaccessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as we will be exploring expansive archaeological areas with uneven surfaces, ancient cobblestones, and dirt paths. It is also wise to bring a reusable water bottle, which can be refilled for free at Rome’s historic public drinking fountains (nasoni). You can even find the nearest water fountain on Acea website or download the official app. During the sunny summer months, don’t forget to pack sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as shade is limited within the ruins.

Our private guided tours take place as scheduled, rain or shine. Since the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill are primarily open-air archaeological sites, we highly recommend checking the weather forecast for Rome before your tour and bringing an umbrella or a rain poncho if precipitation is expected.

In the rare event of extreme weather conditions where the Colosseum administration or safety personnel officially close the monuments, we will immediately contact you to reschedule the tour or find the best possible alternative solution.
